Japandi is the trend for 2021 and is ideal for creating a clean and tranquil home. This style is the combination of Scandinavian with Japanese. These two styles naturally go hand-in-hand as both of them are based around simplicity, use of natural materials and functionality. In the age of fast paced living Japandi provides the peace and calm that is much needed by many in their hectic and busy lives.

Despite being on different sides of the globe the two styles have much in common. The philosophy of this hybrid style is keeping things pure and simple and reconnecting back to nature using materials. There are lots of ways through which you try out this style and transform your home into a place of relaxation.

Use natural materials

A key component of the style is the use of natural materials. Integrating the outside into the home will create a more peaceful and purer element to the home. Try using rattan, wood or bamboo pieces in your home. This can be done subtly using small elements such as bowls, lampshades and other decorative pieces or you can be bolder and choose rattan cupboards, wooden table. For those who are looking to make a real statement then go for bamboo wallpaper or wooden ceilings. These changes will instantly elevate the space.

Quality over quantity

Simplicity is a defining feature of Japandi so choosing good quality pieces is crucial. Japandi is all about keeping your home clutter-free so choose quality over quantity and go for a handful of well selected and made pieces to make a stamen. Choosing a well-made piece might seem pricey at first however, it will last you much longer and be able to withstand daily use as well as bringing sophistication to your home.

Embrace Imperfection

‘Wabi-sabi’ is a Japanese belief that is based around finding beauty in imperfection. In a world filled with filters and the need for perfection, we forget that that there is beauty in flaws and that not everything has to be ideal looking. Embrace this belief and look for second-hand or vintage pieces of furniture such as dining tables and chairs. These preloved pieces add individuality to your home as well as becoming a conversation starter.

Use muted colours to find a balance

Japandi is all about peaceful environments so avoid using clinical whites or anything that’s too bright as this will disrupt the space. Go for off- whites as a base and then try out using muted navy and greys. These colours are a great for walls as they compliment so many materials and other colours. Using light woods can add some warmth to the room and make it more inviting. You can also go for some darker colours such as emeralds, deep brown and even black and incorporate them subtly through leg chairs, vases and cushions.
