Reflections on DAB-UK: Texture Talks
An Afternoon of Inspiration and Insight
In late September we returned to The Pavilion in Bournemouth for another successful event Texture Talks: Materials and Finishes in Interior Architecture & Design. The event proudly welcomed over 150 industry professionals, including suppliers, makers, designers and architects. Each attendee came with enthusiasm to deepen their understanding of how materials, texture, and finishes can influence creativity and lead to more dynamic, functional design solutions.
“I just wanted to say how excellent the event was. Even though we aren’t designers, it was full of a lot of valuable information” - Event Attendee
We are so thankful to the incredible speakers who brought creativity, knowledge and inspiration to the afternoon:
Dr Vanessa Brady OBE, president of the SBID, explored the importance of budgeting in design, sharing her insight on the legal side of design and how to build a strong routine that supports both creativity and structure.
Michael Grubb, founder of Michael Grubb Studio, shared his memorable mantra “start with darkness”, leading a powerful discussion on sustainability in lighting and how illumination can transform the mood and purpose of a space.
Matt Evans, award winning landscape designer, highlighted the beautiful interaction between nature and interior spaces, reminding us of sustainable potential within the natural world we already have.
Matt Robb, representing The Stone Federation, explored the importance of preserving traditional craftsmanship in an era where the younger generation are moving away from it. He also reflected on sustainability, noting that stone remains a cornerstone of sustainable design today.
Max Mcmurdo, designer, author and Tv personality spoke candidly about the importance of learning through failure, the realties of interior design in television and the ways to successfully up-cycle.
John Cooper, designer and BBC’s interior design masters winner discussed the vital role of neurodiversity in design, sharing both his journey on the show, interior design masters, and how that large platform can be used to inspire the next generation of creatives.
“Thanks for such a brilliant event! So authentic but professional as always from all speakers! Great to hear from a range of industry professionals and definitely left feeling inspired!” - Event Attendee
We were thrilled to welcome back Roddy Clarke to host once again, hosting with passion, warmth and insight. His engaging discussions encouraged reflection and connection, while both sessions resonated deeply with attendees through their focus on design, purpose and community. Another key theme explored was neurodiversity, highlighting it’s growing importance in the creative field.
“Lovely to hear your personal experience with neurodiversity and the creative brain as this is something I can definitely relate too.” - Event Attendee
The afternoon flooded with multiple networking opportunities, as guests shared perspectives, exchanged ideas and forged new collaborations. Feedback following the event was overwhelmingly positive, with many describing the talks as “Inspiring” and “Grounding”, offering fresh perspective and renewed motivation within their own design journey. Attendees left feeling enriched with a deeper understanding of how materials, texture and finishes can shape creativity, and just how important the community can help shape the new way of the design industry.
Looking ahead, we’re excited to continue this innovative way of inspiring through more events and collaborations, influencing the present and future of design through effective, sustainable and meaningful creativity.
