Reflections on DAB-UK: Sustainable Style

An Inspiring Afternoon of Design and Green Thinking

In late November, we gathered at The Pavilion in Bournemouth for Sustainable Style: Interior Design and Architecture for Greener Living. A timely exploration of sustainability in our creative work. This event welcomed over 120 industry professionals, including designers, architects, suppliers, and makers, all eager to engage with the evolving challenges and opportunities of eco-conscious design.

Thanks to a well-curated lineup of speakers, the afternoon offered practical insight as well as genuine inspiration:

  • Mara Rypacek Miller of Industville shared her journey of building a brand with craft and longevity at its core.

  • Chloe Bullock, RIBA-author and BIID Sustainability Committee member, discussed how knowledge and education are shaping the future of responsible design.

  • Scott Lewis reflected on creating The Bide, a sustainable retreat recognized in The Times and Elle Decoration, as an example of sensitive architectural practice.

  • Emer Gillespie from Spark & Bell shared her experience with B‑Corp-certified lighting rooted in circular design and handmade craftsmanship.

  • Summer Obaid, of Abstract House, spoke passionately about transforming the art market to be greener and more democratic through purposeful business models.

Hosted with warmth and clarity by Roddy Clarke, the discussions felt both grounded and forward-looking. Attendees praised the accessibility of each speaker’s insight, noting the blend of honesty, hope, and actionable advice.

Feedback after the event echoed this sentiment. Many commented that the evening offered real value, especially the balance of aspirational ideas and concrete guidance. The conversations didn’t just inspire, they equipped. It was a meaningful gathering that showcased how our industry can move toward greener practices with intention and creativity.

Looking ahead, we’re excited to help continue this dialogue - through future events, collaborations, and shared inspiration. Sustainable design isn't a destination but a process and it’s one we’re proud to advance alongside such thoughtful peers.
